Florida summers are pretty scorching. It’s very common to keep the air conditioners running non stop during the summer. Changing your HVAC air filters is critical for its long life and preventing possible Orlando AC repair needs.

Why should I change my air filter?



A dirty air filter is the #1 reason for HVAC system failure. A dirty filter restricts the air flow into your HVAC systems air handler. This restricted air flow places additional strain on the air handler fan motor and could, over time, burn out the motor and cause your system to overheat and ultimately fail. Filter replacement is a small price to pay to extend to life of one of the biggest financial investments in your home.



Where is my air filter located?

Your air filter is most likely located right next to your furnace or air conditioning system air handler. The air handler is the large box containing the fan and fan motor. The air handler pulls air in from the house through the “return” duct system, and then blows the air through the heating or cooling system and back into the house through the duct system. The air filter is typically located at the point where the return duct enters the air handler. Look for a 1” wide hinged or removable cover. The air filter will be inside..

Increasingly, air handlers are being installed in attics. This sometimes limited space will require installation of the air filter in the return. The filter is accessed by removing the grate covering the return duct. It is now unusual to have several returns in a house, with an air filter installed in each return

What are my air filter dimensions?

Air filter sizes come in a variety of dimensions. The most common width is 1”, but height and length will vary by manufacturer. Most standard filters print the dimensions on the filter frame. You can use those filter dimensions to select the appropriate size replacement filter.
Unfortunately, some filters are not marked. In this case you will need to measure the dimensions of your existing filter. Please measure them twice before entering your filter size into the filter wizard on OnTimeAirFilters.com.

Please also be aware that many filters may have actual dimensions that are not exact whole numbers—for example 17½” x 23¾” x 1”. If this is the case, you should round the fractional dimensions up to the nearest whole number. In the example, this would require a filter with nominal dimensions of 18” x 24” x 1”.

How much time do I have before I need to change my air filter?

Start by checking for signs of any visible damage to the filter. Check the filter to see if the cells have collapsed. See if there are holes in the filter. See if there is any damage to the filter. The filter may seem damp, which creates an inviting environment conducive to mold growth. If there is any sign of dampness, the filter should be replaced immediately to maintain healthy indoor air quality. If there are any signs of must smells, you may have a mold problem that could lead to a respiratory illness or allergic reaction. The filter should be replaced as soon as possible.

When should you contact a professional?

If you notice that the filter seems to get dirty quickly after it has been changed, there may be a deeper system problem. What is the SEER Rating?

The SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is how the efficiency of your heating and cooling equipment is measured. The SEER is the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity, as compared to other systems. For example, a 3-ton unit may have a SEER efficiency rating of 13, 14, or 15. The higher the SEER the more efficient the system will be. The SEER rating of any given unit can range anywhere from 13 to 21.

Which brand of AC is the best?

Over my years in the HVAC business ,one question has come up all the time, which brand of air conditioning is the best? Years ago there was as many as 25 different manufacturers. Now a days there are still more than 20 different brands, but now there is only about 6 manufacturers. All the brands perform the same function and basically use the same components. The fit and finish varies from brand to brand as well as the appearance. So which one is the best and why. All the manufacturers warranty there parts for 10 years to the original owner, except Daikin, they have a 12 year parts warranty. Many of the brands are manufactured outside of the United States, except Daikin, they just completed the 2nd largest factory in the US, where all their units are made. Most manufacturers offer a high priced extended labor warranty offered through a third party. Daikin offers a reasonably priced 12 year labor warranty administered through Daikin. Most manufacturers offer high efficiency variable speed units using inverter compressors. Daikin pioneered inverter compressors over 25 years ago. We at Ambrose Air have offered many brands over the years , we have always looked for the equipment that we think is the best value for our customers and for for that reason we are offer the full line of Daikin equipment.

Why is the SEER rating on the Energy Guide different than what my dealer quoted?

Each split system cooling unit has a nominal SEER rating. This rating can be increased with the upgrade of the same series indoor unit. The SEER rating of a system is derived based on the combination of equipment installed in the home. The outdoor equipment (heat pump or air conditioner), as well as the indoor equipment (evaporator coil and furnace, or air handler), play a vital role in the total rating.

Why should I have regular (or preventative) maintenance? And how often should I have it performed?

Your heating and cooling systems work incredibly hard to perform their functions for your home everyday. The constant stopping, starting and continual operation can wear down any machine if the proper care and maintenance is delayed. However, by performing regular maintenance, you can maximize the lifecycle of your heating or cooling unit and guard against many common equipment failures. Preventive maintenance inspections performed on a regular basis can uncover leaks, rust, rot, soot, frayed wires and corroded electrical contacts that the naked eye may not notice. You should have maintenance done on your system regularly to ensure maximum efficiency and allow prevent possible problems that may occur in the near future.

What equipment requires regular (or preventative) maintenance?

At least twice a year heat pumps and air conditioners require a professional tune-up. Because gas-fired equipment functions with greater efficiency, they only need to be serviced every other year. Inspections on boiler and furnace systems should include ductwork, pipes, dampers, valves, the chimney, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, the gas meter, oil tank and every part of the actual furnace and boiler. Meanwhile, heat pump and air conditioning unit inspections should also include inspections of the fan, compressor, indoor coils, outdoor coils, line kits and refrigerant lines.

What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

Since they are electronic, programmable thermostats are more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. With programmable thermostats you can control the temperature in your home at different times of day without ever touching your thermostat. Because everything is automatic, you will never forget to change the setting on your own.

What type of filter should I use? And how often should I replace it?

Standard filters work to keep your system and its ductwork clean, but they don’t really improve indoor air quality. To do that you need a media filter. The media filter rests between the main return duct and the blower cabinet and will improve dust and particle removal by seven times that of a standard filter. However, upgrading to a pleated media filter will remove everything from insecticide dust to airborne viruses from the filtered air. Always choose a filter that matches your blower’s capacity. For optimum efficiency and filtration,Ambrose Air, Inc. recommends that you replace your disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month.
