Cleaning Outdoor AC Unit

Outdoor Unit Troubleshooting



Locate and remove the air conditioner filter. Filter locations vary depending on your air conditioner, but they are usually found along the air conditioner return duct. If the filter is not located within the air conditioner unit, look for an access panel on the interior or exterior of your home near the air conditioner location



Wash reusable filters outdoors. Rinse them with water from a garden hose to remove the dust and debris in the filter. Dispose of cardboard and fiber filters and replace with a new filter, since these are not reusable like the metal and plastic variety.



Turn off the power to the air conditioner unit. Usually, this requires flipping the breaker switch assigned to the unit since most units don’t have a separate on/off switch.



Remove the top access panel on the unit. This is the panel with the vent openings. Locate the screws holding it in place and remove them. Set the panel aside carefully without damaging the attached fan or fan wires.



Examine the condenser coils on the inside of the unit for dirt, debris and dust. Vacuum the debris from the coils using a shop vacuum, taking care not to bend the fins and coils. Rinse the coils with water from the garden hose after vacuuming.



Wipe the fan blades clean with a wet rag. Clear any debris from the fan vents in the panel.



Replace the panel on the unit and screw it in place. Turn the power back on to the unit.

What is the SEER Rating?

The SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is how the efficiency of your heating and cooling equipment is measured. The SEER is the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity, as compared to other systems. For example, a 3-ton unit may have a SEER efficiency rating of 13, 14, or 15. The higher the SEER the more efficient the system will be. The SEER rating of any given unit can range anywhere from 13 to 21.

Which brand of AC is the best?

Over my years in the HVAC business ,one question has come up all the time, which brand of air conditioning is the best? Years ago there was as many as 25 different manufacturers. Now a days there are still more than 20 different brands, but now there is only about 6 manufacturers. All the brands perform the same function and basically use the same components. The fit and finish varies from brand to brand as well as the appearance. So which one is the best and why. All the manufacturers warranty there parts for 10 years to the original owner, except Daikin, they have a 12 year parts warranty. Many of the brands are manufactured outside of the United States, except Daikin, they just completed the 2nd largest factory in the US, where all their units are made. Most manufacturers offer a high priced extended labor warranty offered through a third party. Daikin offers a reasonably priced 12 year labor warranty administered through Daikin. Most manufacturers offer high efficiency variable speed units using inverter compressors. Daikin pioneered inverter compressors over 25 years ago. Why is the SEER rating on the Energy Guide different than what my dealer quoted?

Each split system cooling unit has a nominal SEER rating. This rating can be increased with the upgrade of the same series indoor unit. The SEER rating of a system is derived based on the combination of equipment installed in the home. The outdoor equipment (heat pump or air conditioner), as well as the indoor equipment (evaporator coil and furnace, or air handler), play a vital role in the total rating.

Why should I have regular (or preventative) maintenance? And how often should I have it performed?

Inspections on boiler and furnace systems should include ductwork, pipes, dampers, valves, the chimney, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, the gas meter, oil tank and every part of the actual furnace and boiler. Meanwhile, heat pump and air conditioning unit inspections should also include inspections of the fan, compressor, indoor coils, outdoor coils, line kits and refrigerant lines.

What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

Since they are electronic, programmable thermostats are more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. With programmable thermostats you can control the temperature in your home at different times of day without ever touching your thermostat. Because everything is automatic, you will never forget to change the setting on your own.

What type of filter should I use? And how often should I replace it?

Standard filters work to keep your system and its ductwork clean, but they don’t really improve indoor air quality. To do that you need a media filter. The media filter rests between the main return duct and the blower cabinet and will improve dust and particle removal by seven times that of a standard filter. However, upgrading to a pleated media filter will remove everything from insecticide dust to airborne viruses from the filtered air. Always choose a filter that matches your blower’s capacity. For optimum efficiency and filtration,Ambrose Air, Inc. recommends that you replace your disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month.
